Chinese companies in charge of the construction of RN2 road were the very first to import ISUZU vehicles in Madagascar. In 1984, Japanese Government made a gift to Madagascar including 150 ISUZU buses and some trucks. RANOHISOA was chosen by Madagascar Government to take care of these vehicles, becoming so the first company in Madagascar representing a Japanese vehicle manufacturer.
As this new activity appeared to be quite successful, RANOHISOA created a new company dedicated to handle ISUZU operations in Madagascar, MADAGASCAR MOTORS. The investment included new showroom, workshop and spare parts warehouse.
In the beginning of the 90s, Madagascar went through a big economical crisis and MADAGASCAR MOTORS fell into troubles. In order to pursue its activities, MADAGASCAR MOTORS decided to look for partnership. OCEAN TRADE was chosen among several candidates, and the company became JAPAN MOTORS. New products were launched at that time, such as tires (KUMHO) and agrochemicals (NUVAN, NOVARTIS).
In 2002, after several years of sustained growth, the company took a new step becoming CONTINENTAL AUTO Ltd.
In 2004, CONTINENTAL AUTO made a strategic decision being the first car importer to work with Chinese car manufacturers. Seven years later, after having established successful partnership with seven major Chinese car builders, Chinese vehicles have taken 20% of market shares.
CONTINENTAL AUTO imports 80% of all Chinese vehicles imported every year in Madagascar.
